What it’s Like at GCU

Here is part of Grand Canyon University from the Freshman dorms during the sunset.

Want to know what it’s like at Grand Canyon University? GCU is known for it’s schooling, but they have expanded a lot over the years including a golf course and a hotel with a restaurant inside. Our main sports teams are soccer and basketball. As of 2020, there are 6 parking garages and is still expanding with classroom buildings and apartment buildings.

I am a 3rd year student at GCU and it is a great university if you’re there for the Christianity side of it. The first two years, I lived on campus and it was awesome. The third year, I switched to online. My next year will also be online and then on to student teaching! If you’re planning on going to University for the arts, it is not the university you want to be going to. This university is the best place for business and engineering majors.

The best place on campus is a building we call Thunderground. They have a bowling alley, table tennis, different games you can play. All you have to do is ask someone working there. Not to mention, the food is great when you are on campus for the first couple of months. We have Taco bell, Chick Fil-A, Jamba Juice, and more.

We have a student union, which is pretty much in the middle of campus where we have the food court, GCBC, Tech support, and the Library.

GCU even has chapels on Monday and Gatherings on Tuesday nights. It isn’t mandatory to go.

If you’re new to Arizona, one place you’ll hear about is Dutch Bros (it’s like a Starbucks). GCU used to have a Starbucks on campus, and they got rid of it a couple of years ago. Now GCU has their own beverage place called GCBC (Grand Canyon Beverage Company).

We have many different clubs as well. We have a League of Legends team on campus where they go to competitions. They earn scholarship money whenever they win a competition.

When you begin as a freshman, you will choose what dorms you want to be in. You can’t quite stay in an apartment on campus, but once you become a sophomore, then you can or you can get an apartment off campus and commute. Each dorm will have 6 people including yourself. It’s real fun because you get to meet a lot of people from all over the world. Since it’s a Christin university, you’re not supposed to have drugs or alcohol on campus but some people still brought it.

In the Freshman Quad, we have a pool (the mailboxes are located there too), a gym, and a “Lopes store” where you can grab food and beverages. If you’re on campus, you’ll most likely see people travelling on bikes, scooters, and skateboards. So, if you decide to attend, then you might want to get some sort of transportation.

I had great roommates my freshman year. My sophomore year at GCU was great too. Some of my roommates from my freshman year also became my roommates during my junior year. I’m still close with one of my roommates and she is my best friend.

I thought it was the best experience for me as a college student to find what I wanted to do (which I did), but it isn’t for everyone.
